This Space Dog Made Me Sad

Laika by Nick Abadzis (Amazon) (Goodreads)

I knew the history of Laika, the Soviet space dog, and I still cried throughout this book. If you’re familiar with sad dog stories like Old Yeller or Where the Red Fern Grows, prepare yourself with a tissue box (or two) because you’ll become attached to this cute little Moscow stray quick!

Nick Abadzis’ Laika is the story of the first animal to orbit into space. Sputnik was successfully launched on October 4, 1957.  Soviet politician Nikita Khruschev wanted another launch made in time for the 40th anniversary of the Bolshevik Revolution. This anniversary was in November. Due to the abrupt announcement,  the space engineers went through an expedited creation of Sputnik II. Before attempting to bring any humans on board, stray dogs were used instead. Laika was the first. The space orbit was a one-way trip.

Laika  is one interesting fictional take on the notable historical event. Besides reading from the humans’ perspective, you read from Laika’s  view of her doomed journey. She’s always looking for someone to love and trust. Trust was always temporarily being passed from one human to the next but her love was forever.

Ugh, this book made me go through a serious “gross tears” phase. Just ugh.
